Located on a sunny terrace high above Lake Constance, surrounded by the rolling hills of the Appenzeller Vorland, Heiden is a popular holiday destination and health resort, 810 metres above sea level and 400 metres above the lake.

In the 19th century Heiden became a regular haunt of guests seeking relaxation and convalescence, largely owing to its discovery by the world-renowned Berlin eye specialist Albrecht von Graefe und Heinrich Frenkel, the founder of movement therapy, both of whom played a major role in enhancing Heiden’s reputation as a health resort worldwide.

The disrupting influence of the two world wars, however, led to a sharp drop in international travel, but in recent years, with the support of the tourist industry, Heiden has developed into a modern, independent health resort offering a comprehensive range of health and holiday facilities in its numerous hotels and recently extended spa baths.

The rolling landscape also makes Heiden the ideal place for ramblers and walkers, with an extensive network of well-marked routes and paths.

Whether you want to visit the city of St. Gallen with its many cultural attractions, go rambling through the Alpstein countryside or prefer a scenic mountain rail tour with the Rorschach-Heiden train (RHB) down to the lakeside, followed by a boat trip to Lindau, Germany, or an outing to neighbouring Vorarlberg and the Austrian mountains, Heiden is the ideal starting point.

Local transport facilities are excellent. The Rorschach-Heiden train, a combined normal and rack-railway, connects in Rorschach with national and international lines such as Geneva - St. Margarethen and Zurich - Munich. Heiden also serves as a central starting point for eight Postauto (local bus service) routes.
